Google Announces Official Android Support For Foldables

by Ville-Petteri Ukonaho | Nov 08, 2018

On 7.11.2018 the smartphone industry moved to a new era when Samsung introduced their new foldable display smartphone at Samsung SDC. At the same time Google held their own developers event, the Android Developer Summit.

During the summit Google announced that Android is going to support foldable smartphones right from the beginning and during SDC Google told they have been already developing foldable UI support to Android with Samsung.Android will adapt to support foldable phones, according to Google.
Google's new UI will be ready for the new devices which will come to market sometime next year. The support is exactly what the industry needs to avoid the cumbersome awful UX that e.g. Royole's foldable device has. In order for customers to adopt this new form factor everything needs to be in place from hardware perspective as well as from software perspective. The support is also crucial in order to get developers on board developing new apps for foldable devices.

Clients of our EDT (Device Tech) service can see how foldable phones are estimated to penetrate markets from our Display Technologies report here.

We also wrote, here, about how foldable smartphones will transform the smartphone world in the next decade.
