MWC Americas: Overshadowed by Apple iPhone...

by Neil Mawston | Sep 07, 2017

MWC Americas -- the new name for the old CTIA tradeshow -- takes place next week in San Francisco, USA.

The event is unfortunately timed, because it opens on the same day as Apple's huge 10th-anniversary iPhone launch (Tuesday)!

Media coverage from MWC Americas is therefore likely to be very muted...

But, if you are attending MWCA, what trends should you look out for?

Our Device / Smartphone teams recommend hunting down these three big trends:

1. Demos of 5G phones or networks -- companies such as ZTE will have something to show off. The commercial launch of 5G is now just two years away. The future is nearer than you think.

2. Smartphone payments -- shopping by app, NFC or other methods is quietly becoming more popular in the US and worldwide. Companies such as Mastercard, with its Masterpass payment service and Qkr! app, will have plenty to see.

3. Qualcomm chipsets -- a senior executive from the firm is giving a keynote at the event and should have some interesting viewpoints on the 4G and 5G outlook.
