Q2’17: LG Must Expand to Newer Smartphone Markets

by Rajeev Nair | Aug 01, 2017

LG’s volumes and revenue were hit in Q2 2017 on account of soft demand for its flagships. Handset shipments for the vendor declined by -16% YoY in the quarter. Detailed analysis available in our insight report, from the Emerging Devices Strategy (EDS) Service.

LG has endured multiple quarters of falling revenue and profitability over the past two years. The vendor must expand beyond its strongholds of US and South Korea to new and potential growth markets like India, Indonesia etc. It has got a strong mid tier smartphone portfolio in K and the just launched Q series which are more likely to be adopted in these emerging markets.

It needs to revisit its value driven approach in light of unsuccessful flagship smartphones for a long time. The vendor could look to build better brand awareness with aggressive marketing for its mid tier to bring in requisite volumes and get back to growth.
