Foldable smartphones with flexible/bendable displays have long been predicted, but never appear quite ready for market. After many years of rumor and speculation, this month a principal engineer from Samsung Display has shed some light on the timing of such devices. The new schedule points to the 2019 as being the year when the technology is mature enough for the first device to be unveiled.
Strategy Analytics’ Emerging Device Strategies (EDS) service is following the landscape closely. We see the flexible display market growing fast, as curved display devices (such as the Galaxy S8) grow in popularity. Our recent flexible display forecast shows that the foldable devices will take 1% share of the flexible display market in 2019 and it will grow to 12% by 2022.
For those of us that have been waiting for the devices since the first Youm prototype was introduced by Samsung at CES 2013, this means few more years of waiting. However, the wait will be totally worth it as the devices will combine the functionalities of tablet and smartphone and will truly change how all of us see mobile devices.
Strategy Analytics’ Emerging Device Strategies (EDS) service continues to follow the landscape closely and will provide up to date analysis, insights and forecasts to our clients within this exiting industry.
