The 5G handset market is finally starting to take shape. A 5G roadmap for the next decade is gradually emerging.

Strategy Analytics is forecasting first commercial 5G devices to appear 2020. We expect strong growth for 5G devices as vendors push the new technology through premium devices to the markets.

We expect 5G to be a new air-interface -- building on the progress made by 4G, OFDM, MIMO, WiFi and other related technologies. 5G brings new use cases and expands the usage of cellular data networks to IoT and other industries. There are currently several trials ongoing with operators and infra vendors.

5G developments have accelerated dramatically in 2016. Early initiatives by SK Telecom and KT have been followed by China Mobile, Singtel and Telstra in Asia Pacific region. Despite early reservations about 5G in US AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile have established roadmaps. In Europe - where 4G/LTE is still being rolled out - the primary interest in 5G has been on IoT, vertical and underserved markets from TIM, Vodafone, KPN, Telefonica MTS and Megafon.
