Google I/O 2016: Glimpses of The Future

by Ville-Petteri Ukonaho | May 18, 2016

Google held its 10th Google I/O 18.5.2015 and once again provided a strong action-packed performance offering some very cool new solutions for the future. Here are few selected ones

Google Assistant: Building on the vast experience Google has in AI, Google Assistant is the natural evolution for Google Now and extension of search, supporting “conversational understanding” to make search more natural and to better support voice searches. Google Assistant is the future of search, extending its utility in an infinite number of new directions.

Google Home: Google announced a direct rival for the Amazon Echo at the I/O. The Google Home speaker will service as a portal into the Google Assistant experience. It will also let you control connected devices within the home, and you’ll be able to cast content with the speaker as well. Google Home is designed to become one of the most important devices in your house, able to control a variety of gadgets, including Chromecast, Wi-Fi speakers, Google Nest, and other devices.

Google Home is designed with multiple rooms and speakers in mind from the start. And because it's using the basic Cast standard, you can talk to any speaker and tell it to play music on other speakers, just like you can with Google Cast Audio.

Android N: N focused on three areas: Performance, Security, and Productivity. File based encryption, automatic system updates, and project Vulcan for best in class graphics performance are just few of the updates N brings to Android devices.

Android Wear 2.0: The two year old platform is maturing fast and with the new version Google is making it more usable. The main new feature with the new version is the ability for apps to be standalone and have direct network access to the cloud via a Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cellular connection. This makes Android Wear devices free from the continuous connection to an Android phone.
