Cubic Telecom: More Than Just Enabling Carrier Choice in Cars

Connected cars have gone from the realm of conference PowerPoints a decade ago to reality, with an estimated 300+ million connected cars currently on the road globally, and a higher percentage to come in the years ahead. Although automotive connectivity opens up a veritable cornucopia of potential services and features for both businesses and consumers, there has been one area that has not advanced as far. Until now, consumers that wanted to opt-in to connected car data plans were effectively forced into a contractual relationship with a data carrier of the carmaker’s choice, not their own.

The solution brought to the table by Dublin, Ireland-based Cubic Telecom gives both OEMs and consumers flexibility on carrier choice, and the potential for split billing on the driver’s carrier of choice. But aside from the consumer-facing “surprise and delight” of being able to simply add the car as an additional device to the driver’s existing mobile carrier plan, Cubic’s PLXOR platform enables OEMs and partners to monitor data usage by application to get granular insights on customer behavior and patterns.

It’s one thing to plan and execute a connected car strategy for a single market, but the level of complexity increases exponentially when scaled to a global level. To that end, Cubic Telecom offers global, multi-market regulatory and tax compliance without having to navigate the tedious, complex intricacies on a market-by-market basis in-house.

Cubic Telecom Global Coverage Map
Cubic’s platform is already extensively deployed in Volkswagen Group vehicles, offering simple, multi-market data packages in Europe, and dual-carrier support between Verizon and T-Mobile in the U.S.  Most recently, Cubic announced a partnership with stc, the largest mobile network operator in Saudi Arabia this month, allowing for manufacturers to configure models at point-of-manufacture for sale in the market, with carrier provisioning and regulatory compliance in-place. In December, Cubic partnered with Brazilian carrier TIM.

In addition to the automotive market, Cubic Telecom offers solutions for agriculture, IoT, business intelligence and enterprise connectivity and management control.
