Report Summary:

This report focuses on smartphone technology as an unexpected vital piece of technology used by the sight loss community to not only maintain independence at home and in the world at large but also to keep up with their sighted peers in the workplace.

SA conducted ethnographic research through observation of webinars aimed at the sight loss community and conducted exploratory semi-structured interviews with people who were legally blind in the US, UK and Australia over the phone or via Zoom.

An eye opening read, this report looks at how the smartphone (and Apple in particular) has been a life changer to people who are blind or visually impaired. Although there are still pain points to work on, this community is better able to access the same services as their peers, as well as services specifically geared towards this community through the use of AI, accessible apps and the phone’s camera.
