The excitement around the announcement of foldable smartphones from Samsung and Huawei dominated discussions at MWC 2019. As a long-awaited ‘shot in the arm’ for the smartphone market, foldables will excite leading edge early adopters who are keen for a bold new type of device after many cycles of incremental improvement. However, a number of barriers must be overcome if mainstream segments are to adopt foldables in the longer run. The most important of these is the current lack of differentiated use cases. While prices will come down and designs will improve, we believe that vendors must focus on giving mainstream segments a compelling reason to adopt this technology.
