The majority of smart home owners interviewed agree that they are satisfied with the methods to monitor, control and interact with their smart home device/system. The smartphone companion app is the main method of control and interaction of smart home devices due to the ease of use, accessibility, portability and sufficiency of controls and information provided for everyday tasks. However, for some owners, the companion app is still lacking; as it proves to be limited when compared to the functionality, controls and information provided on a PC, laptop and the device itself. Use of different devices depends on the location of the user, controls, features and information provided by that device/app used, and reliability of the device/app working accurately. As such, it is important that consumers have the option to use all devices that connect to the internet as a method to control, monitor and interact with the smart home. This should include the increasingly popular wearable device, in addition to voice control and gesture control. Using a wearable device to control/monitor/interact with a smart home device/system was considered most favorable of the three approaches by current smart home owners, while smart home intenders showed most interest in using voice control.
