The majority of respondents surveyed in the US and UK have previously binge watched TV/video. Over-the-top subscription based video-on-demand (OTT SVOD) has provided the ideal platform for binge watching content. Consumers have the ability to control what they watch, and accessibility to watch TV/video on their own time. Complicated storylines that require viewers to remember certain scenarios, situations, jokes, etc. are more likely to provide shows consumers binge watch. Accessibility and ease of watching multiple shows continuously encourages a fixation that is hard to break. Catching up on popular shows with the “fear of missing out” on conversations about it is another reason consumers binge watch. However, some traditional viewers still prefer the excitement and anticipation of weekly episodes. A negative connotation of “laziness” that “binge watching” depicts makes consumers hesitant to admit to such behavior. Though in the end, several are guilty of such an addictive activity.
