Report Summary:

OECD Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking Q1 2022 update:

Top and bottom 3 countries for the 5GB per month basket

The Q1 2022 update of the OECD Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking service is now available for download and includes over 1,300 mobile broadband tariff plans from more than 100 providers across 37 OECD countries.

The graph below shows the ranking for a user requiring 5GB of mobile data a month, where Switzerland, Israel and Poland are the top 3 (cheapest) countries.

However, Sunrise in Switzerland shows as the cheapest offer with an unlimited data plan at a very low download speed of 0.5 Mbps for USD/PPP 3.2 price per month BUT if we compare only the offers with the country’s average speed (2Mbps), Switzerland drops one place to become the second cheapest with an offer from SALT at a USD/PPP 5.3 price per month. Israel’s offer is from Pelephone at USD/PPP 4.94 price per month, while the Polish offer is from T-Mobile at USD/PPP 7.2 price per month.

At the other end of the ranking, in the bottom 3 are Mexico, Japan, and Canada as the most expensive countries for the same basket.

While, Mexico is not as expensive as Japan and Canada, it is 5 times expensive as the cheapest plan for Israel, with an offer from Telcel at USD/PPP 27 price per month, follow by Japan and Canada which are 9 times higher than Israel; the offers from Japan and Canada are at USD/PPP 41 and USD/PPP 45 per month respectively.

We have observed a few providers moving away from pure mobile broadband tariffs, and instead offering mobile data within a mobile voice tariff.  Both Movistar and Tigo in Colombia, Cellcom in Israel, Movistar, and Telcel in Mexico and finally Movistar and Vodafone in Spain no longer offer mobile broadband-only pricing. We anticipate seeing more providers following this trend in the future.

The OECD Mobile Broadband Price Benchmarking Service uses the OECD 2017 baskets, and these are shown in the table above. There is no distinction between device types, so all baskets can be used with any device.

Historical pricing for the OECD countries over several years is also available. Please contact us for more details.

Strategy Analytics additionally produces benchmarking services for fixed voice, mobile voice & data and fixed broadband, as well as bundled telecoms services and Pay TV.
