Smartphone Penetration Doubles Driving Non-SMS Data Growth

Please contact us to discuss pricing Contact Us

Report Summary:

Smartphone penetration has doubled over the last year to reach 21% of wireless subscriptions at the end of Q3 2011. The key impact of this growth has been healthy increases in non-SMS data revenues, which continue to lift operator performance in the face of a declining voice market and static SMS market. Smartphones remain one of the few sources of ARPU uplift from within the existing wireless customer base and one which operators cannot afford to ignore. While they bring numerous challenges, not least their increased use for OTT messaging services and subsequent impact on “legacy” SMS data revenues, operators need to focus on the next wave of smartphone adoption, targeting lower cost prepaid smartphones and more entry-level data plan options.
