Report Summary:

In the US and European telecommunications industry, monopolies are gone and competition is here. Over the last two decades, regulators have accelerated both entry of new competitors and more competitive behavior by traditional Telephone companies(Telcos). The current competitive environment requires open interconnect and wholesale access to Telco infrastructure for new service providers – ISPs, Cable companies and even Mobile operators. Traditional Telcos have responded aggressively - bundling new value added services with traditional ones and deploying Next Generation IP Infrastructure. Reduction of monopoly protection and guaranteed rates of return has led to lower prices and is beginning to erode operator margins, just as massive investment is required for Next Generation Infrastructure. Net effect is that investing in incumbent telephone companies has begun to look almost as risky as buying shares in their Cable and Internet provider competitors. Telcos are no longer the plodding companies of grandma’s day that generated unvarying earnings year after year. They now require that investors do more detailed financial and strategic analysis. This report describes some of the key performance variables that need to be monitored on an ongoing basis by Investors as the Telcos’ Risk Profiles change.
