AfricaAsia lifts Vodafone as Eurozone Decline Continues

Report Summary:

Western Europe remains the only region suffering from falling mobile service revenues in Q1 2012 as the weak macro-economic situation impacts end-user behavior. Despite its presence in all of the main Eurozone crisis markets (Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Spain), Vodafone could look to Africa and Asia to lift its overall performance. Telefonica was also boosted by growth outside of Europe, though Deutsche Telekom and Orange struggled to record any mobile revenue growth, with Europe dominating their revenue flows. If the Eurozone economy fails to recover in the short term, operators will need to balance a desire to cut subsidy budgets with the upside potential that greater smartphone penetration brings (through new data revenue flows), as the drive for greater consolidation increases.
