As wireless network providers head toward 5G commercial launches in early markets in late 2018 and first half of 2019, the automotive industry is facing a period of transition in connectivity for vehicles. Part of managing the risks of this transition is evaluating how long 4G networks are likely to still be available to connect 4G enabled vehicles. Mobile operators have yet to seriously consider scenarios for 4G switch-off and 5G coverage will take time to deploy. Based on analysis of previous network transitions, characteristics of 4G and 5G, and Strategy Analytics’ 5G subscriber growth forecasts, we provide an assessment of potential timeframe for 4G sunsetting.
