Report Summary:

Strategy Analytics forecasts global mobile data subscriptions on tablets will more than double from 2015 to 2021, reaching over 200 million. Despite this growth, by 2021 tablets will only account for slightly over 2 percent of total mobile subscriptions, and tablets with mobile broadband data subscriptions will continue to represent only a moderate portion of total tablets in use. In 2012, less than 10% of the total tablet installed base had a direct connection for active mobile broadband service (excluding Wi-Fi connections via tethering/MiFi). With mobile operators offering more shared data plans and lower cost SIM-only tariffs for tablets, the portion of tablets with data plans will increase, reaching 19% by 2021, equating to a 54% attach rate of data plans within the cellular tablet installed base. Thus there is room for upside to tablet subscription growth if operators adopt more aggressive and innovative tablet strategies.

This report forecasts global active mobile broadband tablet subscriptions, service revenue and data traffic from 2010 to 2021. The forecasts are provided for global totals and 6 regions, with detail for 38 countries. In addition the forecasts are split by 3G and 4G LTE, and include average revenue and data consumption per month per subscription. The analysis also looks at the attach rate to data plans within the installed base of cellular embedded tablets at a regional level, and the share of total tablet installed base that subscriptions represent globally. A companion report, "Tablet Traction at Wireless Operators: Shared Data and Consumer Credit Driving Connected Tablet Subscriptions," evaluates business models and makes strategic recommendations for operators
