Will LTE-U Be A Major Step of LTE-Advanced Evolution? - A Review of LTE-Advanced Radio Transmission Features

Report Summary:

The paper reviews the main radio transmission features of LTE-Advanced and potential incremental benefits of LTE on unlicensed frequencies. As Carrier Aggregation approaches bandwidth limitations in licensed spectrum, other features like 4x4 MIMO, eICIC and CoMP become important but place significantly greater demands on devices or network resources. The adoption of these features cannot happen very fast however, so extending LTE to unlicensed spectrum (LTE-U) offers another choice for the mobile industry to further improve performance in the near term. We expect to see LTE-U gaining momentum in next years despite objections from existing Wi-Fi and other users. Although it is only a short term enhancement, it is perhaps also the first step towards a new paradigm of spectrum usage.
