Report Summary:

Facebook’s successful Open Compute Project has helped to create energy efficient commodity computing platforms. At Mobile World Congress in February 2016 Facebook and operator and vendor partners including Intel, Nokia, Deutsche Telekom and SK Telecom launched the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) with the stated goal of reducing costs for access, backhaul and core networking using a similar open collaboration approach.

Will TIP commoditize telecom infrastructure? Create a new simpler network approach? Bring low cost wireless infrastructure to rural areas?

This Insight analyses the likely reality of the initiative.
