The progress of TD-LTE in China has accelerated with MIIT stating that licenses will be issued in about one year with the 2.6GHz band (a major band for LTE) allocated in its entirety for TDD usage. This represents a boost for the TD-LTE ecosystem, creating strong synergies with the deployments at Clearwire in US and Softbank in Japan. However, the development of TD-LTE in China still faces some challenges. The balance should be carefully kept on multiple dimensions: coverage and cost; interest of different operators; TDD and FDD; Chinese and Western vendors. Strategy Analytics believes the Chinese authorities need to consider a more open policy on TD-LTE development for a healthy mobile ecosystem in the long term.
