Report Summary:

Domain Name Service (DNS) already plays a critical role in many Communications Service Provider (CSP) networks for scalable, secure resource location and agile control of virtualized services.

As CSPs expand their 5G portfolios, new 5G services demand new DNS capabilities that will expand its role from data access into real-time networking. DNS in 5G now takes on critical networking roles essential for real-time location of microservice instances, filtering and optimization of control plane transactions over HTTPS, pre-emptive edge security and multi-domain orchestration and management.

Specifically, End-to-end (E2E) 5G services need to leverage DNS capabilities to:

  • Ensure low-latency responses for network and service requests: local, centrally and remotely
  • Standardize a complex range of operations and services across the network.
  • Guarantee performance for ‘network slicing’ and E2E service-level agreements (SLAs)
  • Support dynamic 5G multi-access edge computing (MEC) and hybrid cloud scalability as hybrid private/public networks operate across multiple domains and involve private network edge processing, carrier MEC processing and storage and hosted software at one or more hyperscaler cloud partners (e.g., Verizon and AT&T Enterprise offerings with MS Azure and AWS)
  • Secure access and control across diverse public and private domains, including MEC edge applications with authenticated app and subscriber identity
  • Support dynamic rating and charging algorithms, including free or sponsored data or dynamic event or resource-based rate plans and new kinds of transit- or spectrum-based traffic monetization
  • Deliver future-proof highly automated capabilities

This white paper provides an overview of the enhanced DNS features required for next generation service aware 5G and cloud-native networking. It was primarily authored by Sue Rudd, Director Networks and Service Platforms at Strategy Analytics, David Ayers, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Infoblox, authored the last third of the paper, and provided overall editorial direction with the content team at Infoblox
