3GPP has completed the Phase 1 Cellular V2X standard and kicked off the Phase 2 work. The full support for enhanced V2X service will rely on the Phase 3 standard. That will be completed in 3GPP Release 16 and not be backward compatible with Phase 1 and Phase 2. V2X has significant performance advantages for V2V communications but slow time-to-market and fragmented standards are key challenges. China looks set to lead V2X while 5G networks could become the connectivity anchor for connected vehicles in the next decade, not only for V2X applications but also for telematics and infotainment. The automotive industry should seek to more actively influence 5G standardization to ensure that 5G meets their long term requirements.
