Early deployments proved C-RAN’s performance and economic benefits. But tough requirements and fronthaul limits are barriers to C-RAN adoption. The industry is now working to re-split functionalities between centralized and distributed elements of the RAN architecture to minimize fronthaul requirements. Joint resource management will be necessary for this evolved C-RAN architecture. That will require a Unified Control Plane in the RAN and organization changes for operators.
