OECD Mobile Voice

Are mobile voice prices actually going down?

Download Report

Report Summary:

The mobile voice market is changing, and in recent times many tariffs offered are focussing more on data costs than voice and message prices. The cost of voice (and messages) is often forgotten in all the talk about data prices. So with this in mind we are asking the question: What is actually happening with mobile voice prices? This insight uses the established OECD benchmarking methodologies to analyse the developments of mobile voice prices over time, and finds that pre-paid prices are approaching a price floor where little further reductions can be expected. On the other hand, post-paid prices may still reduce at a rate of up to -10% per year for another couple of years. The lowest prices currently seen, and where prices appear to be levelling out, are around US$0.050 per minute/SMS for pre-paid services, and approximately US$0.038 per minute/SMS for post-paid services. These price levels may change somewhat with usage, especially for post-paid services where “unlimited” usage tariffs are common.
