Report Summary:

OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking Q3

The latest OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking service is now available for download. The current update includes 2568 single and bundled broadband plans from 137 providers and 42 countries.

In the current update the medium user 300GB per month with speeds over 1000Mb/s basket has 241 high speed tariffs available to customers, in 30 of the 42 countries covered, accounting for 60 of the 137 providers we track. Looking back on just two years, the increase in the number of available high speed tariffs has been rising steadily; between September 2017 and September 2019 there has been a 56% increase in offerings over 1000 Mb/s.

In September 2017 there were 135 1 Gb/s tariffs available from 50 providers in 24 of the 41 countries covered. By 2018 the number of offers has reached 183 from 62 providers in 28 countries. The number of actual tariffs and the increase in countries offering the higher speeds is a better indicator than looking at the providers. The fluctuation in the number of providers can come about be as a result of the annual review of providers. Internal market changes like providers being merged can affect the provider numbers as well.

The first graph below show the cheapest tariffs with speed of 1000 Mb/s or over for the current update of September 2019. The second graph is from the September 2018 update. These reveal that in spite of the large increase in the number of tariffs offered the cheapest providers are still in countries like Romania, Hungary, Latvia and Italy.
