Download Report

Report Summary:

OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking Q2 2018: Broadband usage in Western Europe still expensive.

The latest update for the OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking service is now available for download, and includes just over 2,400 standalone and bundled broadband plans from 127 providers across 40 countries.

According to the Ofcom report, UK Home Broadband Performance[1], published in May 2018, the average upload and download speeds for broadband in the UK were 46.2Mb/s and 6.2Mb/s respectively.

In this latest OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking out of all the plans included in the update just over 60% advertise a speed over 46.2Mb/s. In the UK 70% of the plans included offer a speed of or over 46.2Mb/s. The table below shows the availability of packages in these selected countries.  France, Netherlands and the UK have on or over 70% offerings over the speed while France and Italy are just over 50%.

% of offerings with speeds of or over 46.2Mb/s

By modifying the Medium 30GB 10Mb/s basket in the OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking system and setting the upload speed at 46.2Mb/s we can see which of the 40 countries included has the cheapest offer. We can also see where these developed and competitive markets feature in comparison with all the markets covered in the system.

The graph below shows that out of the five selected countries, Italy with the cheapest offer is only number 15 in the results. Germany, France and the Netherlands are grouped together at 19, 21 and 24. The UK comes in at 30 in a table of 40 countries. It is remarkable that none of these countries have an offering that takes them near the top ten cheapest in the system.

This is one example of the capabilities and data set that are available in the OECD Fixed Broadband Price Benchmarking system.
