Opera Software recently released its “Africa Mobile Web Atlas” that showed, among other things, tremendous year-on-year percentage growth in mobile web browsing. Some of the more spectacular percentage gains, like the 744% increase in page views in Côte d’Ivoire or the 1,886,839% increase in Libya, can probably be attributed to low levels of online activity in the base period in 2011 due to intense civil unrest. However, even discounting for these outliers the rate of growth across the continent is impressive. Opera also points out that in most countries the increase in data use is higher than the increase in page views, suggesting that people are using their mobile devices to access larger and more content-rich pages. While increases in the frequency and intensity of mobile web activity are positive signs for operators seeking to improve their data revenue streams, it would be advisable to look closely at the nature and extent of demand for mobile data services and not only their revenue but also their profit potential.
