On 28th March 2011 Telefónica and Microsoft announced a strategic partnership to open up Telefónica’s network enablers to Microsoft’s developer 6 million plus .NET community through the launch of a BlueVia SDK for .NET. Telefonica’s approach represents a significant departure from current operator plans to engage developers. BlueVia, contains two important ingredients to drive the use of Telefonica’s network enablers – partnership with established developer communities and two-sided business models which reward developers for using APIs. Strategy Analytics expects the revenue benefit for Telefonica will be incremental and determined by the adoption of enablers by developers, and ultimately by the success of the applications which use them. However, more importantly, approaches like BlueVia will enable carriers to remain relevant in the delivery of innovative apps whether within or outside the operator ecosystem.
