Mobile media spend via the handset (which excludes tablet spend but includes handset browsing, mobile applications, mobile games, mobile music, mobile video, mobile TV, ringtones, wallpapers and alerts) grew almost 18% 2012 to reach $161B. Operators remain concerned at being bypassed by over-the-top (OTT) mobile media services, and are looking for ways in which to monetize this accelerating trend. However, carriers have gained considerably from consumer demand for media access on their phones, with data revenue accounting for $100 B, or 62.5%, of total mobile media spend. Over the next 5 years Strategy Analytics expects increasing growing demand for popular services and applications to drive global consumer and advertising spending across the range of mobile media to over $200 B by 2017.
