During March 2010 Alcatel Lucent (ALU) announced the availability of application programming interface (API) bundles for developers through its Open API service. Open API provides sets of APIs for developers to license on a revenue sharing basis enabling them to access carrier network capabilities such as user location information, operator billing, messaging and user profile data, among other attributes. Strategy Analytics estimates that operators will be under increasing pressure to open up networks to gain a share of the $23.5 billion off portal premium mobile content spend, and Open API potentially allows carriers to monetize this opportunity. ALU’s major challenge is to entice carriers to partner Open API on a commercially viable basis, and we believe with its current revenue share model ALU may struggle to convince carriers of the business case.
