Report Summary:

Consumers have been gradually increasing their mobile phone use over the past few years, averaging 4.5 hours daily in 2019 year-to-date. This rise has led to a growth in data use levels, both on Wi-Fi and cellular. On Wi-Fi, consumers are using 18.5 GB/month of data and on the cellular, use is nearing 7.3 GB/month, for a combined monthly average of approximately 25.8 GB.

Numerous drivers are pushing data levels higher including faster and more powerful smartphones; increased consumption of video; increased utilization of smartphones in the everyday lives of users; and further consumer adoption of unlimited data plans. Looking ahead over the next couple years, we expect these trends to continue and data use continuing to grow.

In this Insight report, we explore the category of apps and the specific apps that are pushing data levels higher on the cellular side. By understanding these data drivers, network operators can pursue strategic plans that enable or optimize data for these categories and/or apps.
