The Olympics may be in the past but the event continued the proliferation of second screen apps. As stated in the report, Media and Apps: Friend or Foe “With more than 40 billion app downloads expected in 2012 on phones and tablets alone, apps offer an unrivalled opportunity to reach end users via a primarily unencumbered channel with even greater reach into a viewer's daily life than the PC or TV has afforded.” NBC – which paid more than $2B (US) for exclusive rights to the 2010 and 2012 Olympics games in the US sought to maximize coverage through its second screen apps NBC Olympics and NBC Olympics Live Extra apps. The decision begs the question - are second screen apps on the rise or are they niche?
