Report Summary:

Do you need to support Apple Watch right away? Probably not.

The Apple Watch launched in April amidst a flurry of press releases brandishing support from top brands. In fact, it was reported that at launch nearly 3,000 apps were available for the Apple Watch. Most recently, at the September iPhone event it was announced that the library had grown to over 10,000 apps. While this does represent a 3x increase, it pales in comparison to the growth of the iPad library during its launch period. Even if the library has grown ever larger it only represents two thirds of one percent of the more than 1.5M apps available on the App Store.

But, why does this matter? Because apps continue to play a critical role in device adoption, are at the vanguard of the new era of B2C relations and require significant investment by companies to build and support. Apps are so important that Apple presented the new Apple TV under the banner of “The Future of TV is Apps”. Apple TV benefits from support from core services – such as Netflix and Hulu – that drive its value proposition in the absence of applications. The Apple Watch on the other hand will rely solely rest on the strength of the apps built for the platform.

This report will evaluate the condition of the Apple Watch apps ecosystem and determine when/if you need to support Apple Watch.
