On 8th February 2020 Facebook acquired computer vision start-up, Scape Technologies, for a reported fee in the range of $40M. Notably Scape Technologies is focused on providing high-accuracy visual positioning which can be used by machines (e.g. robots and autonomous vehicles) and use-cases like AR/ VR. Given the mapping and location utility, should Facebook be viewed as a potential competitor, or partner, to location players Google, HERE, TomTom and Mapbox?
