U.S. vMVPD Subscribers, by Service (4Q 2019)

Report Summary:

This quarterly tracker presents Strategy Analytics' analysis of vMVPD subscribers in the U.S. for the period Q1 2015 to Q4 2019. vMVPDs or OTT pay TV service are defined as a service provider that delivers a bundle of television programming (live and on-demand) over-the-top, for a monthly subscription fee. This data set is updated quarterly and will be published approximately 8-10 weeks after the close of each quarter. A 5-year rolling forecast for vMVPDs in the U.S. and globally can be found in Strategy Analytics Subscription TV Forecast.

At year-end 2019, there were 9.5M subscribers to vMVPDs, up 432K QoQ. Overall, vMVPDs added 2.02M subscribers in 2019, making it the only pay TV category (i.e., cable, satellite, IPTV, vMVPD) that grew in 2019. As of year-end 2019, vMVPDs accounted for nearly 11% of pay TV subscribers, up from 8.0% at year-end 2018. 

In the next quarter or two, the COVID-19 pandemic will provide a 5% - 10% boost to vMVPDs subscriptions as consumers seek to save money by replacing high cost legacy pay TV services with lower cost vMVPD service while access to their favorite channels. Longer-term (6+ months) results are much less clear as we begin operating well outside the base of historical experience.
