Owners of fixed and mobile data networks have long laboured under the perception that they are “dumb pipes” fit only to collect low margin tolls from disinterested consumers. All the while assertively branded digital content plays have taken the plaudits with many commentators boldly heralding the onset of an age of disruption where content distribution over open (relatively speaking) networks will supplant the traditional distribution paradigms of physical media, retail and TV. There are however signs that a shift in power is afoot in the value chain. As digital content consumption and audience reliance on connectable devices grows, the importance of the network, whether fixed or mobile, is becoming ever more significant.
