On March 18th, Sony Network Entertainment and Sony Computer Entertainment announced the launch of PlayStation Vue, an over-the-top (OTT) subscription TV service available on the PlayStation 4 (PS4) and PlayStation 3 (PS3). At first look PlayStation Vue seems to be a pale imitation of fixed network subscription TV service offered by Comcast (Xfinity), Verizon (FiOS), Dish Network and other pay TV providers in the U.S., however, further examination shows a service that, while not perfect, does have unique advantages compared to its fixed network competition. This Report examines the strengths and weaknesses of PlayStation Vue and its potential impact on the future of subscription TV.
