Report Summary:

Global digital media sector revenues continued to grow in the third quarter expanding 18.3 per cent, with revenues from DMI companies reaching $31.9 billion from $27 billion in Q3 2011, equal to a 163 per cent increase from index base period Q4 2006. Nineteen companies managed to beat year over year quarterly index growth. Youku, Blinkx and Qihoo lead the index growth signaling solid growth in the online video market as well as a strong Chinese online media sector. Digital music bounced back in Q3 2012 following a small quarter on quarter decline in Q2, growing by 33.2 per cent to reach $2.8 billion which is a 241 per cent increase from index base year 2006. Online game sector expanded by 22.8 per cent to $3.4 billion, equal to 270 per cent increase from index base year 2006. In terms of trailing twelve month revenues (TTM), DMI grew 4.2 per cent from previous quarter to reach $124 billion, equal to a 212 per cent increase from the index base year 2006. Digital music was the strongest segment on a TTM basis with revenue reaching $10.5 billion in Q3 2012, up 29.6 per cent year-on-year—driven by Pandora and Apple’s strong performance.
