Motoroogle Cable Will Unplug the Google TV Strategy
Beyond the intellectual property and mobile ecosystem aspects, Google’s announced $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility brings with it Moto’s sizeable (and profitable) set top box business. Industry whispers—and shouts—say that the acquisition of Motorola’s STB business could provide Google a mulligan on its failed Google TV launch. Other pundits suggest that it could provide the necessary “wedge” for Google to fit itself snugly in the American living room. Strategy Analytics believes that, while on the surface these appear plausible, it is unlikely that the deal will do much to advance Google in the TV space.
