As the M2M market irresistibly morphs into the broader Internet of Things (IoT), consolidation is inevitable, as automated M2M solutions become part of broader, more wide-ranging solutions. In the IoT era, companies are bringing to market increasingly smart and connected products which can generate value in new ways as streams of real-time operational data are captured, analysed, and shared to deepen a company's understanding of its products' performance, use, and reliability. One of the areas most likely to see consolidation is the Application Development Platform (ADP) space, where vendors provide machine application development, management and integration services. Strategy Analytics’ detailed M2M Application Development Platforms (ADP): Competitive Vendor Assessment report highlighted how the leading ADP vendors were real targets for acquisition but that very few of them were generating significant revenue, and those that were had focused their operations as part of a broader approach to M2M, involving connectivity or modules as part of a broader turnkey solution. Half the vendors covered in that report have now been acquired and several others are clear acquisition targets. It was little surprise therefore, that Axeda has finally been acquired. As Strategy Analytics mentioned in May 2013 “It [Axeda] is a prime target for acquisition…with the M2M market nascent, it has major expansion upside” . What is surprising is that after acquiring ThingWorx for $112 million at the end of 2013, PTC has again outlaid significant cash for a company with whom there is overlap with ThingWorx in Axeda, only this time the cost was $170 million. What is most notable is the fact that both companies have made multiples on their annual revenue. This report will assess PTC’s acquisitions and the motivation for those, as well as what this tells us about the ever evolving and fast moving application development space in the Internet of Things.
