At WWDC 2017 Apple made public the details of watchOS 4. From Fall 2017 the new platform will power all Apple Watches shipped and be an upgrade option for all versions of the industry leading wearable. WatchKit developers can access watchOS 4 in beta today. The latest OS is a ‘light’ release that wisely fixates on areas like Siri and fitness. However, 4G support is nowhere to be seen. Foregoing LTE indicates Apple is unconvinced that phone independence via 4G is ready for prime time in the iconic product, and that bulkier competitive 3G/4G variants will not sell. Longer term, Apple is also protecting core iPhone revenues from cannibalization.
