The tablet market now has three strong operating systems for casual activities as well as productivity with a fourth, Chrome, making its entrance in 2018. iOS 11 finally has a file system; the Windows 10 experience on a tablet is indistinguishable from a PC; and, Google introduced multi-window functionality on Android 7.0. Enterprises are well served with current options but many consumers are being left behind as prices for Detachable 2-in-1s running iOS and Windows are still out of reach. Momentum for Windows tablets stalled in 2017, mostly due to a sharp decline in Windows Slates and a lack of unaffordable Windows 2-in-1s for consumers. Android market fragmentation weighs down perceptions of quality for new 2-in-1 options, impeding the ability for Android vendors to break out of the stagnant slate market and into more profitable 2-in-1 tablet form factors.

Yet, hope remains. Pricing trends on Detachable 2-in-1s are showing a slow decline and over the next five years, we believe that Detachable 2-in-1s will compete much more closely with comparable PCs, reflected in growth for iOS, Windows, and Chrome market share through 2022. Vendors and operators must determine how to optimize their portfolio mix to anticipate these changes coming around the corner.
