Smartphone Price Erosion PRICETRAX

Download Report

Report Summary:

Mobile device price erosion (over time) can be tracked using pricing data from Strategy Analytics’ PriceTRAX database.

In this PriceTRAX Extract smartphone depreciation in the UK is measured over the past 12 months for the Apple iPhone 5s, Samsung Galaxy S4, the Sony Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z2 using:
  • Prepaid/Unsubsidised Retail Price
  • Lowest Total Cost of Ownership
  • Minimum Monthly Plan Price
The next generation flagships: Apple iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S5 and Sony Xperia Z3 are also included to show any impact new launches have on the value of the pre-existing flagship smartphones.

Within the UK market it was found that:
  • Samsung Galaxy S4 depreciated by -36% over 12 months and was consistently the lowest valued flagship smartphone across the 3 metrics of price erosion used.
  • Sony’s adoption of 6 monthly refreshes is speeding up the “fall through tariffs”.
  • Apple’s iPhone 5s 32GB fell from a minimum monthly tariff of €66 (when the handset was free of charge) down to €44 per month as iPhone 6 launched.
Strategy Analytics’ PriceTRAX Extracts demonstrate queries run on PriceTRAX data. PriceTRAX collects weekly pricing for mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, mobile phones, wearables etc.) from over 300 channels across 48 countries globally. PriceTRAX captures 3 pricing types: prepaid/unsubsidised, postpaid/contract and financing. PriceTRAX links to Strategy Analytics’ SpecTRAX database which includes the detailed specifications of over 20,000 mobile devices for pricing and spec trend analysis.

Both PriceTRAX & SpecTRAX have demo versions available. For a more thorough evaluation of the products Strategy Analytics offer trial access which can be arranged by contacting the team.
