Selfie Smartphone Camera Spec Trends

Download Report

Report Summary:

The megapixel race is still on for front facing/selfie cameras in smartphones. Front facing smartphone camera resolution has increased 4 fold over the past 12 quarters in comparison to the 2 fold increase shown for rear camera resolution. In this report, Strategy Analytics’ SpecTRAX database has been utilised to determine the average front facing camera resolution by quarter announced. Vendor comparisons show that Apple ranks the lowest in terms of front camera resolution.

Unlike rear camera resolution, front camera size shows little correlation to retail price; there are no appreciable differences across the price bands ≥150 USD. Selfie smartphones are not necessarily the territory of the Flagship device, although 5MP front facing cameras are now becoming standard for Q3 2015 announcements. The 300-449.99 USD price tier has the largest front facing camera size in Q2 2015. Apple has stoically retained its 1.2MP front camera for the latest iPhone iterations, whereas Samsung’s S6 & S6 Edge sport 5MP front facers.  Recent mid-tier announcements by Sony, the Xperia C4 (ProSelfie Smartphone) and the 13MP front facing camera of the Xperia M5 indicate a niche in this price range for “selfie smartphones.”

Strategy Analytics’ SpecTRAX database monitors device announcements for smartphones, tablets, mobile phones, wearables and USB dongles and records up to 300 detailed device specifications. Strategy Analytics’ PriceTRAX database tracks weekly handset retail pricing (prepaid, unsubsidised and post paid pricing) across 48 countries from operators and retailers.
