Samsung Overtakes Apple to Become World’s No.1 Smartphone Vendor in Q3 2011
Global smartphone shipments reached a record 117 million units in the third quarter of 2011. However, annual growth slowed to 44% due to weakness at giants Nokia and Apple. Samsung overtook Apple to become the world’s largest smartphone vendor for the first time in history. Apple’s growth fell to its lowest rate for two years, due to iPhone 4S timing and increased competition from Samsung. Meanwhile, Nokia’s marketshare halved from a year earlier, caused by a challenging transition period from Symbian to Microsoft. RIM and LG are both being challenged to address portfolio issues.
