Q3 11 RIM Results Disappoint but Launch of BBX Clarifies Future Direction

An eventful quarter for RIM was overshadowed by figures that broadly disappointed. All the key metrics were down, as the positive effect of the introduction of a new generation of smartphones was offset by weaker demand for older BlackBerry phones and disappointing sales of the PlayBook tablet. RIM positioned itself for the future with the launch of the BBX platform, which is designed to combine the best of BlackBerry and QNX, but it faces a delicate balancing act in the short and mid-term.
