Time ran out for BlackBerry’s phone manufacturing business as the company announced that it would no longer make smartphones. The news follows disappointing results in 1H 2016 for its first Android smartphone, the BlackBerry PRIV. BlackBerry will pivot to a licensing model and make its brand-name and specific BlackBerry software available to other handset makers. Some micro-vendors in specific markets would continue to make BlackBerry branded devices, but by-and-large the iconic BlackBerry smartphone is now dead.
