Android Claims Majority of the Worlds Smartphones Shipments Q3 2011
Global Android smartphone shipments surged +236% YoY from 20 million units in Q3 2010 to 68 million in Q3 2011. Android currently owns 56% of worldwide smartphone shipments. However, with more than half the global smartphone market, some carriers may soon start to question whether Android has become too powerful this year. In contrast to Android’s hyper growth, Microsoft continued to slip back. Microsoft’s global smartphone market share has almost halved from 3% during Q3 2010 to under 2% in Q3 2011. Microsoft has struggled to compete with the lower costs and perceived higher usability offered by Android.
