Global smartphone shipments reached record levels in Q4 2012 and FY 2012. While Android was once more the dominant global smartphone OS by volume, Apple reclaimed some market share thanks to the first full quarter of availability of the new iPhone 5. This trend was especially apparent in North America, where Android appears to have peaked, but globally Android still accounts for a significant majority of all smartphones shipped. BlackBerry and Symbian continued to see their global presence shrink, and while Microsoft experienced a boost from the launch of Windows Phone 8 in Q4, the gain was smaller than expected.
