Third quarter 2011 handset shipments improved on the previous quarter, but were still slightly down year-on-year, as a combination of public sector austerity measures and fear of the collapse of the Euro-zone weighed heavily on consumer sentiment and UK growth. Samsung extended its lead in the UK during Q3, and augmented its sales via operator channels with a strong showing at the UK’s number 1 retailer: Tesco. While Nokia arrested its decline for one quarter at least, Samsung’s gains came mainly at the expense of Apple, HTC and RIM, with its flagship Galaxy S2 selling especially well. This report tracks handset vendor shipments and market share at the major UK carriers during Q3 2011: O2, Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile and Three.
